Rule

Reiki is an ancient Japanese relaxation technique that can facilitate healing - on a physical as well as on an emotional level.

Wellness is a precious gift most of us take for granted until it diminishes or disappears. Once we have arrived at a situation where our health is diminished, we often think that there are few options to regaining wellness. That is simply not true.

One therapy being recognized for its substantial benefits is the laying-on of hands with the intention to heal: the process of transferring healing energies form one individual to another. This idea is not new. In the fifth century BC, Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, stated; "It is believed by experienced doctors that the heat which oozes out of the hand, on being applied to the sick, is highly salutary. . ." Thousands of doctors, nurses, and health professionals in the US and around the world use therapeutic touch as an integral part of their practice. In study after study science has now confirmed the significant positive effect of such practices. There are a variety of forms of touch healing with a variety of names: healing touch, therapeutic touch and Reiki.

Reiki is a form of relaxation that facilitates healing—based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is the source of our being alive. The name Reiki comes from two Japanese words: Rei, describing the universal aspect of this energy and ki, the fundamental life force, or the energy that flows through and in all living things. Believed to have originated in Tibet, Reiki was rediscovered in the 19th century by a Japanese monk named Dr Mikao Usui. In the early 1900s Reiki was brought to the United States, to the islands of Hawaii, by Mrs Hawayo Takata. An amazingly simple technique to learn, Reiki is not taught in the usual sense. The ability to use the Reiki energy is transferred to the student during an "attunement" given by a Reiki master. The attunements open the energy centers of the hands and a series of techniques transmit this energy to oneself and others. Once attuned, Reiki energy is with you for life.

Reiki energy does have some unique characteristics. It can do no harm. The energy always goes where it is needed most. And it is available to everyone. Reiki works on many different levels to bring the body, mind and spirit back into balance so healing may occur.

Reiki energy empowers and supports healing acute and chronic disease, as well as fatigue, depression, anxiety, stress and other symptoms. The existence of a "life force energy" has been verified by recent scientific experiments, and modern day medical doctors are considering the role it plays in the functioning of the immune system and the healing process.

During a private Reiki session, the practitioner gently places the hands on or above the problem area while the client remains clothed and relaxed on a treatment table designed for comfort. Some people report feeling a variety of sensations such as heat, vibration, tingling, a reduction of symptoms and deep relaxation.
